wtf

Apparently at a recent evening event at the zoo, some bastards managed to injure two of the resident meerkats. The meerkats live in an open enclosure so that people can see them clearly and enjoy their antics, and also so that the meerkats can see the blue sky and feel the fresh air on their little faces. It's a happy and popular exhibit. They're charming and fascinating animals. So why the FUCK would someone want to hurt them? One of them had her head/jaw smashed, and the other one was all scraped up -- both injured in ways that only a bastard human could have caused. It makes me so SICK. Of course they'll never find the culprits, but if they ever do, I recommend that they be put down immediately. Anyone who intentionally takes another life (except in self defense) forfeits their own. Even more so when it's a completely innocent life, of a captive animal, no less. These poor zoo creatures are only here for our amusement -- and supposedly our education and edification. If you think it's fun to shoot fish in a barrel, you should be shot in the head.

  1. Some people hate themselves due to some deep shame, whether acquired or learned-- usually from parents. They can't process their own feelings or find a way out, and so they turn it on others-- hating everyone and everything in their paths. Even if not caught, they will self-destruct, never fear. The memory of what they have done will fester and haunt them. I don't wish them ill in saying this-- I just think that this is how it works. Inescapable. Poor community structure breeds very maladjusted people, sociopaths, etc. Not rooted in family, in community, in Earth-- rootless and flailing around, hurting innocents. That's my 2 cents at present, at least. It is very sad, on all levels. -- Jennifer

  3. Hopefully there's some meerkat karma coming their way. I think the meerkats will be okay, but they'll be off view until they recover, and maybe even longer thanks to these jackasses.

  4. Glad to hear they both survived the ordeal, though it is very sad they had to endure such torture. I know it's hard to deal with the seeming senselessness of it all, but how much is actually known about the perpetrator(s) and their intent? Sure, this may have merely been the work of an "asshole" or two, but was it fully premeditated, were there intoxicants involved, was someone trying to get too friendly with the Meerkats and a tussle ensued, was it a mentally-challenged teenager? I am not trying to justify what happened, but rather pointing out that there are many possibilities that could have lead to this unfortunate incident. It is understandable that you are angry and want vengeance, but your anger is being fueled in part by assumptions in your mind regarding the whos, hows, and whys. I feel sadness for the meerkats' suffering, and have sent them love in the ways that I know how. These are the same feelings I have for the attacker -- sadness that they would feel the impulse to do such a thing, that they must live with the memory of their wrongdoing, and also a hope that they will receive the love and understanding that they have likely not been granted before. Of course, I also hope that they are "caught," if only to prevent any future harm from being caused. Those are my thoughts, at present. If I've said too much, just shoot me.

  5. Karma will set things right eventually. I appreciate the philosophical approach, and I too am sorry that there are people out there so troubled by whatever elements in their own lives that they're led to harm others, but in my mind there is NO excuse for intentionally harming a fellow creature. This could not have happened accidentally. To give empathy to the perpetrators -- whatever their motivation or condition -- is to undermine the many people who overcome myriad challenges, hardships, disabilities, etc., and yet still refrain from adding more misery to the world around them. In the grand scheme of things, perhaps it's all a wash, but in this realm of existence I believe we should all be held accountable for our actions. If we make a "mistake," the least we can do is come forward and do our best to make amends. And living alone with your guilt is not enough.
